Does Partiotism Still Matter

Patriotism is still essential in American tradition for it is those who respect their country who bring you your freedom. We must respect that as well as all things here in America. We must also respect our brethren who have gone to risk their lives knowing that they will make a difference. All Americans should come together for it is not those who sit at home doing nothing, but those who are working in some way for this grand country of ours. Patriotism is respect for your country. You may not like this country, but you can complain to make a difference because every act for this country is patriotic in some way. For some those are just words, but for me and for all the others it is a way of life.

Hemmingway Character review

Two men are sitting in a corner of a café talking and watching an old man drink at the counter. The café is a nice small place in a small town. The café is clean and well lighted and it sits in the shadows of the leaves of the trees. The two men sit and talk when the man asks for another drink. They know he has drunken too much. The two men start talking again about each other this time. As they talk they find out that they are more different then they realize. Each lacks what the other has in "A Well Lighted Place" by Ernest Hemmingway. Each waiter has the same job, but everything else is different.

The older waiter is a very relaxed man who is patient and understands the world around him. He lives alone and cares about others more than himself. This is shown when the he doesn't mind staying in the café late and stays with the old man because he understands him. He has no one to go home to, so he is very lonely and doesn't mind staying because he has company. This state of loneliness really separates him from others because most people have friends and family to go home to or to see. When the older waiter goes home; he has no one.

While the older waiter is wiser and more experience with life the younger waiter thinks that money is happiness and that he is the most important man. He believes that he shouldn't have his time wasted by sitting in the café watching the old man drink. He wonders why the old man drinks and isn't happy because he has a lot of money. The fact that he believes that money is happiness and how everything is about him makes a selfish and stubborn man.

All and all the waiters are very different. They have almost everything in their life different. Does this affect their relationship? How is their view of life different? They look at everything different and have a different felling about many things thus making them look downward upon each other not understanding each other.

One More Day..(Not yet Completed, but feel free to read and give feedback)

Sven-German boy imprisoned for standing up against Hitler back in world war II.

It is day 1254. Imprisoned for life. It has been a lonely life. All your mates wantt nothing to do with you and you want the same. Staying in a small confined room bout 6 ft by 7 most of the day. Give or take some inches figuring I know not how long a foot is; just an estimation. The rest of the day is for meals or for hard, back-breaking labor and yes I mean that literally. Aside from the usual fights and other exciting stuff that happens around here it does get dull, after a long time, but that's the least of my worries. Ya, today is Tuesday and the executioner works on Tuesdays.

Вадим(Vadim)-Russian boy training to become soldier.

6 hundred hours. Finally I got to sleep in. Usually get up around 4 hundred hours if I am lucky. You think they might take it easy on poor farmer boy. Well think again! Da military is not all fun 'n games. In this world you never rely on chance to get you anywhere. It is 615 hours; time for training. Today should be fun. For later we go to Germany.

Oranjinho-Brazilian Farmer

It is May 4th 1950. Cinco years after the second great war. It is a nice spring day perfect for farming. Been up for tres hours so far and barley have half the field seeded. Father will be angry if the field isn't seeded by the time he gets back from the market. He can be very irritated if morning work isn't done. There is a plane coming this way, but planes don't fly over this part of Brazil and it is coming rápido and low. De ninguna manera!! It just decimated my neighbors farm. This isn't good. I have to get the the bunker before the next plane strikes! Why is this happening again!

~~Breaking News, an attack from an unknown source just struck a remote part of Brazil. It is said to be part of an unknown terrorist attack, but no one knows for sure. Tune in later for for an updated report.~~

~Attention passengers we shall be arriving in Germany in 30 minutes please return everything to the upright positions.~

It has been 3 hours on this plane from Russia and we will finally arrive in Germany.
"Hey Vadim are das ready for advanced training" said a fellow soldier.
"As if I wasn't ready Sergeant" The plane shuck with mighty force. We looked around at each to see if anyone had a clue what was going on.~~Attention we have been hit! Return everything to upright position NOW and brace for impact in T minus 10,9,8.~~ A large explosion drew everyone's attention to the matter at hand. ~~We have lost another engine! BRACE FOR IMPACT!!!!~~

Day 1254, it finally night and time to sleep. The executioner didn't get to me today. I get a nice view of the sky at night. What is cool is that meteor in he sky.
"Attention all you prisoners" said someone over the intercom. "There is an unidentified object falling towards towards he prison and will hit in about 5 min. So get to the basement NOW!!"
We all rushed out of our cells towards the small and cramped thing they call a basement. So that wasn't a meteor after all. Of course my cell is the one on the opposite side of the prison. I wasn't going to make it even if I ran all the way, so I just waited in my cell. I watched as the plane came hurtling down towards us. I wanted to see where it would crash, so I could know if I was going to die today. After a minute I found the path of the decent and of course it was going to soar right above my cell, but it would crash in the area of the "basement". I waited for about another 2 minutes and then the plane soared over me. I saw a flag on the side. It was Russian. Just then the plane hit the ground and exploded. It sent metal and debris flying everywhere. The shock wave from the crash hit my cell and sent everything flying including me. I hit the ground and passed out

The glorious whitwasher.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning and everything was peaceful. A young boy wanted to play, but he had to work. He had to whitewash an entire fence, but he didn’t want to whitewash anything. What if this was you? What would you have done? “The Glorious Whitewasher” by Mark Twain is about who a young boy named Tom who had to whitewash his fence, but of course he didn’t want to. He gets out of his work by making it seem incredible to the other boys, so they would want to whitewash the fence for him. With a little effort you can dodge most problems that are thrown at you.
Because of the problems, this story demonstrates the mode of comedy. The story began with normalcy like all comedy stories do, because it is a normal day for Tom. He goes outside to play, but the conflict arises. The conflict is that he has to whitewash the huge fence in his front yard and of course he doesn’t want to whitewash it. Soon the conflict is fully realized by Tom and he doesn’t what to whitewash the entire fence. Finally the resolution occurs by Tom getting most of the town boys to whitewash the fence for him by making the job seem fun. Then finally normalcy returns because Tom runs out of whitewash, so he can’t make the boys do the chores anymore.
Throughout this comedy, there are many characters that play important roles in the story. Tom is one of the characters. He doesn’t like to work at all. He is a trickster and a con artist. He is also mischievous. Ben is a character in this story too. He really likes to imagine is a boat on the Mississippi and he was easily persuaded into Toms whitewashing trick. Jim is in the story too. He procrastinates and he is easily persuaded too. He likes to sing a lot, but he wasn’t tricked into whitewashing like the others.
With these characters come symbols that represent things that they don’t seem to be. The whitewash brush is a symbol in this story because it represents a trade that can get others to do the work for Tom. The marble that Tom had represented freedom for Tom because if Jim takes the marble he will be freed from the job that he has to do. Also the whitewash is a symbol too. It represents the work that had to be done in the time.
Because of these symbols the story can be a comedy to the end. As you can see most problems can be dodged with a little effort. When the boys came to whitewash for Tom; they had to give Tom something to whitewash. He gets most of his wealth by doing these things. If you had a job you didn’t want to do like Tom, how would you avoid it?

The Thrid Wish

Imagine driving through the forest when you hear something. You get out of the car to check where the mysterious sound came from when you hear it again. You wander towards the spot where the sounds are coming from. You find a trapped animal and save it from the trouble it is in, but then find out that the animal is the King of the Forest and you receive three wishes for rescuing him. “The Third Wish”, written by Joan Aiken, is a story about how Mr. Peters, a man who has had almost everything he wanted, gets three wishes to use. The thrill of getting three wishes might be amazing, but you have to remember that somethings can be more trouble than they seem.

Because some things aren’t what they seem to be, this story shows great evidence that it is a romance story. This story follows the romance plotline really well. This story starts out with some mild conflicts; like all romance stories. In the beginning of this story, there is a swan that is trapped as helplessly in a thorn bush as a fly trapped to flypaper. Aiken really shows how the swan was trapped by how the swan was shouting for help. Mr. Peters helps the swan out of its predicament, but only to find out that the bird is actually the King of the Forest. The King assumes that Mr. Peters wants some fabulous reward for rescuing the King from a trouble. “I expect three wishes. No more, no less,” Mr. Peters said to the King. As the story follows along with the plotline, as most stories do, more conflicts occur. “I wish I had a wife as beautiful as the forest”, that was Mr. Peters first wish; and first mistake. The next morning he finds a beautiful girl named Leita which later he finds out she is his new wife. Not soon, but later, does Mr. Peters discover that Leita is actually a swan and is unhappy as a human. The story ends in a new beginning; Leita is a swan again and although Mr. Peters died, he was very happy with his life.

Even Though Mr. Peters died, the characters were all unique and interesting in their own way. Mr. Peters is a smart and helpful man. His love for nature made him save the swan. The King is another important character. He wears a cloak of green, a crown of gold, and has a beard as white as snow. He is also arrogant, spiteful, reluctant, and not the smallest bit friendly, but he is the man who gave Mr. Peters his three wishes. The last character is Leita. She is a quiet and beautiful girl who loves Mr. Peters. She has blue-green eyes, dusky hair, and skin as white as a swan’s feather. This is because she was a swan, but was turned back.

Though there are many great characters, there are many great symbols too. One symbol are the leaves which represent the three wishes. They represent magic and how things must be thought through. Leita’s gold necklace is a symbol too. It represents the bond between Mr. Peters and Leita. Leita’s sister who is still a swan is also a symbol. She represents nature and how things are better the way they already were.

The symbols are all great, but in the end; the story is overwhelmingly perfect. When most things are too good to be true; they usually are. Mr. Peters was a great man and was happy with his life. Even though his 1st wish didn’t turn the way he planned; he still was happy just the same. If you were Mr. Peters and you had three wishes, what would you wish for?
